A minimum of 13 people killed and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
